07/28/2008 3:32 PM Alert

Denham Springs, LA (July 28, 2008) – Fun Ford’s 17th annual visit to famed Bristol Dragway takes place this weekend August 1-3, 2008 where the Thunder Valley FFW Nationals will be the sight of one of the best events of the year.

The Battle of the Brands will be on in full force as at all makes are invited to take on the Fun Ford regulars with Saleen Speedlab Street Stang and RPM Outlet Ultra Stang being the only two competition classes reserved for Fords only. Fans can look forward to some of the region’s quickest and fastest Pro Street, Outlaw 10.5 and True 10.5 cars around. All classes will be contested in a ¼ mile format, with the exception of Street Outlaw and two bracket classes which will run 1/8 mile.

Fun Ford’s wild True Street class will also be open to the Battle of the Brands for the first time ever as participants vie for bragging rights and magazine exposure. As an extra treat, True Street entrants will complete their 30 mile cruise on the high banks of Bristol Motor Speedway, home to NASCAR’s fastest ½ mile track.

With the season coming to an end in October, this is the time of year when the battles for  the season championships really begin to heat up. Bristol will be a pivotal race for a number of categories.

In Probe Pro, David Schorr comes into Bristol riding a reasonably safe 74 point lead over Dale Brinsfield driven Shelby GT500 owned by Jerry Williams. Should Brinsfield go rounds at an event that Schorr fails to attend, it could come down to a winner take all shootout for the title at Ennis.

Performance 2-Way Communications Street Outlaw saw Conrad Scarry assume the point’s lead over 3-time event winner Grant McCrary after Norwalk.  Scarry has a 52 point lead in the title hunt. A win at Bristol could lock up his second championship regardless of what McCrary does at the season finale.

ProCharger Renegade is the scene of the closest point’s battle seen in years. With 6 different winners in as many events this season, defending champ Travis Franklin holds a slim 1 point lead over Angel Padilla with 3 races to go. All of the season’s previous winners are expected to do battle at Bristol in what should be an exciting run for the finish.

Of course, there are some other close battles for championship points going on in the other Showdown classes, too. In Borla Street Bandit, defending champ Mac Sibley leads by three rounds over Tom Conrad, Jr. while Robert Chuhran goes into Bristol with a 24 point lead over Paul Gamino with three points races left. In the $5k Challenge, David Higgins and Jamie Talbert are in a virtual tie with the season champ to be determined at Bristol.
