I would spend the extra $125 bucks and gets reciever grooves put in the heads. Copper gaskets are the only way to go with or without grooves. I wouldnt put a cometic gasket on my mower. But some guys swear by them.

well my personal opinion on head gaskets i would prefer the SCE copper head gaskets .. i've worked for ford for over 10 years and have seen the problems with the cometic head gasket .. but i guess if you have a perfect machine finnish with absolutely no flaws or scratches the cometic would be the way to go if you didn't have o-rings .. just my opinion .. i would say on a ford, go with the cometics only because of the head bolt patter. but if its a chevy, stevie is right, go ahead and spend the money to do receiver grooves. if not youll hafta spend that money and then some on head gaskets over the next couple of races.

I had a conv headed bbc with 16.5 to 1 compression and i was spraying between 850 - 900 hp of n2o. NEVER had head gasket issues with sce copper gaskets. however, i do have an o-ringed block AND receiver grooves in the heads. as for the cometics, i really dont know because ive never had issues with the copper ones.

CLEAN, FLAT, SMOOTH are key to sealing any head to block.

There should be no more than .002-.003 difference when checked with straight edge.

RA finish of 40-50, which varies some depending on engine and application is required on block and head with cometic gasket.

Cometic WILL NOT work on o-ringed block as both require the RA finish to seal correctly.

Copper gaskets will work just fine IF the surface is CLEAN, FLAT, SMOOTH and the o-ring height and depth is correct along with proper torque on heads. Re-torque after initial warm up on copper.

Any head can and will lift IF tune is incorrect no matter the gasket.

Not an expert just some thought from experience

the copper coat spray works great . but a couple a years back i had a head gasket leak from some crap called holamar it was blue .. Jason Mote and Outlaw Jack told me about a permatex product called high tach .. it is purple it is some stringy messy crap to apply but let me tell you it is some good stuff .. i assemble all my engines with it now .. and have never had another leak .. Outlaw105w, I have helped Randy put together a few motors for Jack over the past 2 years, and I have seen other people coat the entire gasket with glue, and I have seen people glue around all the holes. Randy does not glue the entire gasket, mainly because of clean-up. But also keep this in mind, we freshened the 870 every 20 passes, so it was apart regular. The permatex is to keep water leaks out.....we dont use alot of it on the 632 because it has no water, just use a dab in a few places. Hope this helps! But you can actually coat the entire gasket with a layer and assemble it that way.

We just put a thin layer of permatex around the water holes with o-rings in the block and no receiver grooves in the head on our 16-1 motor. We aint got it loaded with juice either. But I know it will hold a 400 shot with no problem.
