Atlanta Dragway  -  Commerce, Georgia

April 22-23, 2006

ORSCA /Year One opens Points Series at Atlanta

Outlaw Racing Street Car Association opens its first race of the Points Series at Atlanta Dragway, Commerce Georgia, April 21st – 23rd, while partnering with “The Year One Experience”. Year One hosted several events at Road Atlanta, just a few miles from the Dragway.

Fans were offered discounted tickets and able to “float” in between both events the entire weekend. Year One also sponsored a car show at both Road Atlanta and Atlanta Dragway and the 10.0, 11.0 and 13.0 Index classes running with the ORSCA classes to add a definite presence of the newly formed ORSCA / Year One partnership beginning for 2006.

Family Reunion in the Pits
As members of ORSCA are scattered across several states, the first several hours of arrival at Atlanta Dragway seemed more like a re-kindling of friendships missed during off-season, than competitors about to put each other on the trailer back home.

Weather conditions at the beginning of qualifying presented overcast skies and the threat of rain, but that didn’t seem to damper the competitive spirit of these Outlaws. Mother Nature did empty herself during qualifying creating delays in the process and during the second round, moisture on the track and heavy fog at the lower end forced the completion of the 2nd round of qualifying for Outlaw 10.5, Limited Street and EZ Street to be postponed until Sunday morning.

Qualifying Order:
The normal three rounds of qualifying were cut to the completed two rounds as time restraints to get the race in would not permit another qualifying pass per class.

Elimination Sunday

Outlaw 10.5
After the completion of qualifying, Outlaw 10.5 produced a quick turn-around for eliminations. Under beautiful blue skies and temperatures around the 70 degree mark, track conditions seemed favorable for some hot, all out, heads-up racing.

In the quarterfinals, 2005 World Champion Terry Robbins was put on the trailer by Craig Miller with a 4.687 at 159.34 to Robbins problem pass of 5.742. Jimmy Blackmon put Rome Berry on the road back home with a 4.708 pass at 167.44 to Berry’s 5.288 at 149.52.  Jack Barfield loaded up Mike “The Hitman” Hill with a 4.763 pass at 157.23 to Mike’s 8.619 as he had problems on the lower end. Steve Kirk, Jr. out ran Bobby Cole putting him into the semi final.

Semi-final action put Miller against Blackmon and Barfield against Kirk.  Craig Miller beat Jimmy Blackmon in a close run at 4.713 at 158.14 to Blackmon’s 5.647 at 160.88. Blackmon was slow off the line for this run with a reaction time of .121 to Miller’s .023 but you have to admit Blackmon has this Outlaw car flying on the lower end. Miller advances to the finals.  Jack Barfield against Steve Kirk, Jr., another exciting, close heads-up run.  Steve took the win light with a 4.699 at 161.34 to Barfield’s 4.712 at 155.92. Sending Steve Kirk, Jr. to the final against Miller.

The win in the final went to Steve Kirk, Jr. as Miller had problems at mid-track and had to let out. Kirk ran through the lights with a 4.705 at 161.34 to capture the money and the trophy.

This new union of Kirk & Ferguson is already showing its potential. Congratulations !!

Limited Street

Carl Thompson took out Tim Dunn with a 4.986 at 152.93 pass over Dunn’s 4.347 at 145.77.  Last but not least Jeff Cooner’s with a new ride for 2006 over Paul Davis with a 5.117 at 148.85 to Davis’ problem pass of  7.400.

Final round was an unreal drag race. Keith Sazbo takes the win over Cooner with a 5.095 at 158.61 to Cooner’s 5.050 at 151.10. Cooner’s reaction time off the line was .001. to Szabo’s  .085…Szabo pulled out this win with the horsepower on the lower end.

Brewer ran a 5.171 at 138.20…and the left lane again caused problems for Stack. Tim Kincaid took the win with a 5.536 at 135.74 to Carl Henderson’s problem pass in the left lane…again.. of  8.163.

The Year One Experience – Road Atlanta Recap

In speaking with Brad O’Cock, Media relations for Year One, who also is a drag racing enthusiast, Brad states, “Year One  participants in the Road Atlanta event put down over 2,000 laps on the auto-cross track and hosted 30 participants in the Stainless Steel Brakes Corporation 0-60 mph challenge.” Best time wins. “ There were 80 participants that ran their cars in the Open Track Day, where they attended a class, their car was given a tech inspection, and they were able to run the Road Atlanta 2.5 mile road course, at speed, in their cars. There were hundreds of people that were able to run the course behind the pace car for a thrilling chance to experience the track and what road racing is all about.” O’Cock further provides, “ The Year One cup winner was Jack Jenkins with his 1967 Chevelle, who received the hand-blown crystal cup with an additional $5,000.00 gift certificate to Year One and an extremely nice amenities package. I have to say, that between what we, at Year One had going on at Road Atlanta and what ORSCA is able to provide in Heads-up drag racing, it was a speed weekend, we all enjoyed !!”.

Speed… that’s what its all about. Need for speed, the competition and the memories.

Come join ORSCA at Carolina Dragway May 19th – 21st for the second Points Series of 2006. The “House of Hook” is a favorite amongst this group and be prepared for record setting passes, as this first race was simply….TEST ‘N TUNE.
