ORSCA Returns to Atlanta Dragway
July 7 – 9 brought the Outlaw Racing Street Car Association back to Atlanta Dragway for their 5th Points Race of the season. Atlanta Dragway lasered the track to the 330-foot mark with hopes that it would provide the traction that these Outlaw cars needed. This action provided a huge improvement over the ORSCA opener race, held at the track just a few months before. Ray Wilkins, General Manager stated, “We got a better grip on what these Outlaw cars needed and made preparation for their return. Now let’s see what they can do”.
The final eliminations that were rained out at Farmington Dragway were run in the last round of qualifying. The points and the trophy were awarded accordingly. At the end of three rounds of qualifying, the following is where the top contenders stood:

Mike Hill and Steve Kirk were paired to complete their final for the Farmington race. Mike Hill took the win with a 4.61 to Kirk's 6.13 problem pass. Congratulations to Mike Hill on the trophy and the winner's points for that event !!

Eliminations
As 19 awesome Outlaw 10.5 cars, class sponsored by Mickey Thompson, manned the field for eliminations, the thunder under the tower at Atlanta Dragway, let their presence be known.
The prevailing winner, Marcus “The Axeman” Birt under Tindle Enterprises Racing, sailed round to round to put away some of the heavy hitters such as Bobby Cole in the second round with a 4.64 to Cole’s 4.73, then Mike Hill in round three with a 4.63 to Hill’s 4.71. In the semi-final, Marcus took out Steve Kirk with a 4.735 to Kirk’s problem pass of 5.00. Final Round pitted Birt against his former employer, VIP Racing, now with Michael Robinson behind the wheel. Marcus took the winner’s circle position over Michael Robinson with a 4.621 to Robinson’s very close 4.674. Marcus is on a two-win roll as he just came off the win at an invitational held at Macon National Dragway just before the ORSCA points series race at Atlanta. Look Out Marcus! They will be coming to get ya at SGMP.

The number one qualifier in the Nitrous Express Limited Street class, Jeff Cooner out of Townley, Alabama put on one of the best performances of his ORSCA career. When you’re hot, your hot! Cooner put out David Reese in the second round with a 4.966 to Reese’s 5.132. Third round Cooner landed against Carlton Thompson and took the win with a 4.951 to Thompson’s 5.014. The final round was one to go down in the books. Eric Dillard and Jeff Cooner ran identical ETs at the lower end, 4.968 for Dillard and a 4.968 for Cooner. Cooner’s reaction time off the line of .009 and a top end speed of 156.54 to Dillard’s .050 at 154.71 secured the win light for Cooner at the finish line.

The TCI EZ Street class fielded 19 unbelievable wheel-standing hot rods. Robby Erwin out of Lithonia, Georgia, who also won the points series in his class at U.S. 19 Dragway, breezed through the field and made it look EZ as he took out the World Record holder Donnie Key in the second round with a 5.29 to Key’s loss of traction pass at 6.010. Erwin then paired with Wade Hopkins out of Tupelo, Mississippi and pulled the win light with a 5.28 to Hopkin’s 5.70. Semi final round put Erwin against Jeff Plemmons out of Old Fort, North Carolina. Plemmons must have not brung enough as Erwin took the win with another 5.28 pass to Plemmons’ 5.47. In the final, Thomas Kincaid, who had just sent home Tommy Brewer, took on Erwin who passed Kincaid at mid-track with problems and sent Erwin on to winner’s circle.
Consistency is the key… and Erwin had that one down pat on race day! Congratulations to Robby Erwin and team on their win in Atlanta.
The Draggin Speed Outlaw 5.30 class fielded a perfect ladder of 16 cars for the Atlanta event. David Goodson out of Weaver, Alabama in his convertible “Alabama Outlaw” 69 Camaro stole the show as he boosted himself in the points by taking the win over Lester Pitts in the first round with a 5.33 to Pitt’s 5.58. Second round found Goodson against Southern Truck Parts and Kenny Acree, who has put on quite a show since arriving at ORSCA. Goodson pulled the win light against Acree in an extremely close run at 5.31 to Acree’s 5.32. It had to be close at the finish line. Semi finals placed Goodson against John Smith out of Jackson, Georgia, Goodson took that round with a 5.31 to Smith’s 5.32 as Smith red lighted off the starting line. Final round hosted Allen Keller out of Forest Park, Georgia, who had just put out Lank Mohone in the semi final on the other side of the ladder. Goodson carried himself to winner’s circle with a close run of 5.33 to Keller’s 5.35. The 5.30 class put on one heck of a show for the fans in Atlanta this weekend.

The Industrial Depot Outlaw 6.0 class produced 24 cars from Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and North & South Carolina’s. Jody Volyes, the ORSCA 2004 World Champion hit a gold strike again as he wheeled his red 1987 Mustang to the winner’s circle by taking down, Lebron Hill on a breakout in the first round, Jim Knight with a 6.03 to Voyles’ 6.02 in the second round and a tough contender, Michael Strickland in the semi-final. The final put Jody against David Harvey, the number one qualifier, as Voyles ran a 6.03 to Harvey’s close 6.05. 6.0 Index class if going to be tight at the end of the year as all of these cars and in close range of running a perfect dial in.
Congratulation to Jody Voyles. You are back in the game again!!
Last, but definitely not least, the Atlanta Speed Shop’s Outlaw 7.0 class brought in a 34-car field of extremely competitive index cars for this event. The win went to Kevin Thompson out of Glasgow, Kentucky over Chris Sloan, Hayden, Alabama. Kevin in that beautiful green F85 Oldsmobile ran extremely consistent all day long with a 7.03 first round, a 7.009 second round, a 7.001 in the third round, a better breakout of 6.993 and the number that put him in the winner’s circle, a 7.004 against his competitor, Chris Sloan as Sloan was hesitant off the line.
Congratulations to Kevin Thompson for his first ORSCA win of the season and taking home the money and the trophy. Kevin stated, “Green” looks good on a race car and in your pocket.”
